Dear Jeff,
If your iPad air 2 is wifi and celluar model, you can update the firmware by Wi-Fi.
If your iPad air 2 is wifi only model, it may cause to you couldn't turn on personal hotspot to finish connection,
so that you may need to upgrade it by other device.
Due to designed, you need to turn on the personal hotspot (no matter you got nmobile data or not) to finish connection first.
Then you could choose to upgrade firmware by Wi-Fi or personal mobile data.

I've been searching for the guides, but I'm not a tech guy and need some easy instructions. Sorry for such a silly question.

If your dongle (please refer to the product name shown on your screen topleft) is Miraline、Mirawire、SGLink、PTVwire，
you could upgrade it by option A.
If it is Miraplug, you could upgrade it by all of option A&B.

B. Another way upgrade firmware by Android device needs turn on USB tethering, the steps are below (refer to the picture).
After turn on USB tethering, you would see the Firmware upgrade option at the left side bar.
As a reminder, if 'USB tethering' comes grey, please try to change a new USB cable and retry.
